Cozy Up Your Home This Season
One of my favorite things to hear is when my kids say “I love how cozy our house feels, mom” I mean, the people in our home is why we put so much energy into thinking about our home, right? wether it’s those who live in our space or those who we invite in to share a meal around our table, we genuinely want our space to feel inviting and life giving.
as the season changes with the leaves, the lake days are behind us and we slowly drift into autumn like the shadows drift into the kitchen in the early evening, I begin to look for ways to cozy up our spaces even more. I look for ways to create places where my people want to gather, and where they will want to linger just a bit longer. Here are some of my favorite ways to make that happen
TEA AND ALL THAT IS WARM
I am stocking up on our favorite tea leaves and making sure the honey is plenty as tea will be served around the clock. morning tea is a great idea as is afternoon tea and books. As is evening tea whilst we scurry about with dinner preparations. Coffee and hot coco are in order as well and I will be interchanging them frequently or sharing a warm cup with a fellow momma at my table.

Here is an electric kettle I have been using for over a year now and absolutely love it [Gooseneck Electric Kettle]
If you use loose tea leaves like I do, these tea bags are a great option [and so is a reusable tea infuser if you prefer]
For coffee, we like the smooth taste of the French Press method and love this one here
TEXTILES AND LIGHTING
As the days get shorter, we need to brighten our days a bit with light. And I am not talking about overhead light! Instead, opt for the gentle glow of lamps, candles, light strings and the fireplace. Scatter lamps around in strategic places to create cozy spaces for reading, playing games, sipping a warm drink, or having a heartfelt conversation. perhaps your little one loves the magical feel of string lights, don’t be afraid to throw up a string or two in her room [even if it’s not Christmas]. Let the fireplace be the only source of light on moody evenings and watch everyone gather around to watch the flickering flames dance about.
And making fires means it’s time to bring those fuzzy blankets out of storage and set them about strategically. Knowing there will be many a child in the morning hours looking for a blanket to wrap around their legs as they curl up on the couch next to me. I will place blankets in baskets, drape them over couches and casually throw them at the foot of our beds. these are some of the softest ones ever!

WINTER HYGGE LIST
Long gone are the days we spent at the lake splashing in the gentle waves way past dinner. Now we have pots of soup bubbling on the stovetop and fresh baked bread inviting all to gather in the kitchen. We still go out to the woods to walk the quiet trails and sit by the banks of the glassy lake but most of us are ok to gather inside a bit more and here are some of the things I have on my list for fall and winter indoor activities. I call it my “Winter Hygge List”
bake all the delicious things
light candles [we either roll our own beeswax candles or use battery operated ones, you can find them here]
bracelet making with beads or paracord
weave on a small loom
Candle dipping [we use these beeswax pellets]
Puzzles
watch family shows
play more board games
fall asleep reading books in bed
take hot chocolate and a blanket and watch the sun set from the bed of the truck
bring out the wooden trains [this set paired with this one] and Magnatyles from the closet and set them on the living room floor for easy access
MAKE IT PERSONAL
Don’t set a chair in the corner simply because it will look best on instagram, set your room up to best serve your family and your needs. Display your rock collection along with the feathers your kids have brought home from your nature walks. Show off your kids artwork in a frame for all to see even if it is not the latest trend on pinterest. Making the room feel personal and usable is an instant way to add coziness to your home.
