My top picks for journaling

Ok, as busy moms I don’t expect us all to just have extra time we can put towards hobbies or things that aren’t strictly making our homes run smoothly. But as my children have gotten older and I am not in “the trenches of the little years”, I have found a joy in journaling on occasion. This isn’t something I do daily but I do enjoy it when I get to sit down with a warm drink on a rainy day and jot a few thoughts down here and there.

with my personality type, I can get bored doing the same thing over and over so it comes to no surprise that I have several types of journaling that I do. Here is my breakdown:

-kids journals [a book I have for each of my children where I jot down accomplishments, things I want to remember, quotes, and thoughts I have for them]

-bullet journal

-seasonal journal [the one I collect ticket stubs and little notes left by my kids and tuck them away in the pages with entries and details I don’t want to forget]

-art journal [sometimes words fail and I simply want to sit and draw or mostly paint what I feel. This is a fun way to get thought out when words are few]

So let’s talk top picks

NOTEBOOKS

I have used an assortment of journals… bound notebooks, small ones, oversized books, hard cover, and I have concluded that I prefer normal sized spiral notebooks, unless I am writing down tips for my garden or herb facts, then I want my small pocket sized bound notebook but thats for another day.

I like the simple and cohesive look of the black or brown spiral notebooks as they sit on my shelves, waiting to be filled in. and once their pages are full, I don’t have to tuck them away and hide them, they can stay on the shelves to be opened up again and again.

here are some of the ones I prefer and use

Spiral hardcover notebook

Pocket size hardcover notebook

Ruled hardcover journal

Blank page kraft notebook

MARKERS & PENS

I do like to get really creative when it comes to making the pages for my journals, and a must have for me are fine tip markers or pens [I personally prefer felt tip markers] and this beautiful collection of colors is one of my favorites! they are not only brush markers but also fine tip, making it easy to fill in but also jot down thoughts. [Primrosia 60 Dual Tip Marker Pens]

another item I like having on hand is just a fine line black ink pen. these have been great to have for journaling [Prismacolor Premier Fine Line Illustration Markers]

SUPPLIES

your supplies will vary, depending on your projects. but here are some on my list I like to have to make journaling and creating that much more enjoyable.

Washi tape

papper trimmer

prints [I order mini-prints from Paraboo Press and add so much personalization to my pages

glue [I sometimes use a hot glue gun but for the most part this set works great]

water colors

extras include stickers, kraft paper, ticket stubs that I collect from places we visit, and any other scrapbooking element I pick up along the way and add to my basket.

I don’t think this should be complicated, just start with an empty journal and jot down things you are thinking, quotes that inspire you, song lyrics that speak to your heart, bible verses that stand out, memories, dreams… anything and everything. And don’t forget to enjoy the process!

happy writting!
